听As an architect, Bing Thom鈥檚 values and beliefs were inspired by Henry Elder who, as Head of the UBC School of Architecture from 1962 鈥 1974, moved its focus from 鈥榯he production of architects鈥 to 鈥榯he understanding of architecture鈥. He firmly believed that "students should not lose sight of their real purpose in changing civilization."
听
Crediting Elder鈥檚 influence, Bing Thom later stated: 鈥淚 feel that architecture really has the potential to transform communities鈥 makes people realize that they鈥檙e bigger than they are, that they鈥檙e able to do more than they do.鈥澨
