Like the rest of Quebec, Rimouski is experiencing a housing crisis, so much so that dozens of people have been living in hotels over the past year. Some have stayed a few weeks, others several months. This lack of a sustainable housing solution is no longer tenable. There is an urgent need to provide citizens with enviable alternatives, to design living spaces that are accessible and that people want to make their own. In Rimouski, a number of local businesses already exist, promoting a dynamic, short-cycle lifestyle. The parking lots that currently cover the downtown area could be transformed into inspiring spaces for exchange and sharing. What's more, when it's cold nine months of the year, it's good to live in a warm, supportive community. The Soci茅t茅 de D茅veloppement Angus and Provencher_Roy have set themselves the task of creating the right conditions for such a community, through an affordable housing project currently under development.

By the completion of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss the notion of 鈥渁ffordable housing鈥, often confused with social housing.听

  • Define how affordable housing can be a desirable alternative for community building, using Rimouski as an example.听

  • Recognize the fundamentals of housing to offer an atypical architectural approach.听

  • Identify best practices in affordable housing design that could be applied outside Rimouski.听

Subject Matter Experts:

Sonia Gagn茅
Architect, B.Arch., DEC in Arch. Tech., OAQ, OAA, FIRAC
VP Design, Principal Partner, Provencher Roy

A seasoned visionary and masterful designer, Sonia Gagn茅 is part of the leadership team at the helm of the practice. She has been a partner since 2010, having acquired thirty-some years of experience, including 17 years with the firm. Her excellence in leadership has been recognized on numerous occasions, particularly by CREW M in 2019, Female Frontier Awards in 2021, and through awards in architectural competitions in which her design projects, like the Port of Montr茅al鈥檚 Grand Quai and Cruise Terminal, have been presented.

At the helm of various civic and significant urban projects (development of Sainte-Catherine Street West in Montr茅al, LeBreton Flats in Ottawa), Sonia pushes the limits of an innovative approach accompanied with phases of disciplinary reflection and characterized by continually evolving social and urban contexts. Her expertise spans the health care (H么pital Pierre-Le Gardeur), cultural (Jean-No毛l Desmarais Pavilion 鈥 Montreal Museum of Fine Arts), transportation (Vend么me metro entrance), commercial (lg2 Offices), and sports infrastructure fields (Colis茅e Vid茅otron).

Regardless of the type and scale of her interventions, Sonia makes use of architecture as a powerful catalyst for conveying nuanced realities, while reinforcing and stimulating the identity and dynamic and enduring citizen appropriation of a place. Actively involved in her field, she sits on the boards of directors of the Antiquarian and Numismatic Society of Montr茅al (Ch芒teau Ramezay) and Montr茅al centre-ville. In 2021, she joined the honorary committee for the annual Gala of La rue des Femmes women鈥檚 organization.
